István László’s work explores the relationship between physical and digital artefacts and their role as mediators in remodelling experiences of collective memory. A central thread in his art is a critical examination of information dissemination and the inherent power of iconography and iconoclasm. László interrogates systems of erasure, reconstruction, and deconstruction, exposing the mechanics behind image-making and the ideologies embedded in visual culture. His current participatory projects explore the interactive potential of digital 3D objects and their impact on our perception of authenticity and relationality in our digitally mediated realities. László’s investigative approach gains striking contemporary relevance with the rapid advancements in AI image and moving image generation and manipulation. His work critically anticipates and engages with the shifting landscape of digital representation, directly addressing the urgent challenges to visual veracity in contemporary culture. László's practice invites viewers to reconsider the visual world we inhabit—not as neutral or fixed, but as constantly contested and constructed, making visible the subtle ways visual culture shapes our understanding of ourselves within larger systems of control, belief, and representation.
